Lyons Colorado Recreation
Like many other communities in the Rocky Mountain foothills, Lyons
has no shortage of outdoor activities available to residents and
visitors alike. But even if you are not an outdoor enthusiast, there
are a multitude of interesting things to do in this picturesque little
town. During the winter, people can ice skate in Meadows Park. Interesting shopping is available among the quaint shops in downtown Lyons.
There is also a skate park in town for kids and teens to enjoy. Though
Lyons itself does not get a lot of snowfall compared to surrounding
areas, nearby Peaceful Valley and Camp Dick offer snowshoeing and
cross-country skiing. If you are just looking to take a stroll outside,
Lyons has three beautiful town parks. Scenic drives can also be taken up the St. Vrain Canyon.
Lyons Sculpture Trail: Solve a Mystery!
For all the walkers out there, Lyons
offers a unique excursion that might appeal to your more adventurous
side. The Lyons Sculpture Trail is walking trail that leads visitors by
25 different outdoor sculptures around the downtown area. A guidebook
leads through the various interactive exhibits and provides clues to a
mystery that must be solved.
Cool off in the St. Vrain River
When the weather heats up in the summertime, many Lyons residents like to cool off by going inner tubing in the St. Vrain River. There are two main drop off points, one from Meadow Park and the other from Bohn Park. Kids and adults alike love the fun adventures that can be had from floating down these mild rapids.
The Lyons Hiking Experience
Hiking is one of the premier outdoor attractions around the Lyons
area. Fortunately, there are trails for all types of hikers to explore.
The Button Rock Wildlife Preserve is located in a river valley 7 miles
west of town. Not only do the trails within Button Rock provide amazing
views, but also visitors are able to see a lot of wildlife and water
management facilities. Anglers are also able to access several
backcountry fishing locales from the trails in Button Rock.
Hall Ranch: An Outdoor Enthusiasts Haven
Hall
Ranch is another prime location for outdoor excursions. Hiking,
mountain biking, and running are all allowed on many of the winding
trails throughout this multi-use recreational area. There are over 12
miles of trails 3,200 acres of backcountry wilderness to explore at
Hall Ranch Wildlife Habitat. It is located just one mile west of Lyons.
Hiking and Biking Heil Valley Ranch
Heil Valley Ranch also provides hiking and biking opportunities for the people of Lyons.
There are over 4,900 acres of backcountry here, and some trails allow
for equestrian use as well. Those who are looking for a more
challenging hike may want to check out the Lion Gulch Trail, which
traverses up 6 miles through Roosevelt National Forest
to a group of old homesteads at Homestead Meadows. This dog-friendly
trail is open to hikers, bikers and horse riders. Dispersed camping is
also permitted along the trail.
